Bodycount: The Humiliation of Women on TikTok

The term 'bodycount,' originally used in the Vietnam War, has become a tool for humiliating women on TikTok, perpetuating patriarchal views.

Videos with questions like 'What's your bodycount?' lead to judgment and devaluation of women with more than a few relationships. Marie-Josèphe Bertini, a professor at the University of Côte d’Azur, points out that social media amplifies anti-feminist trends.

The term, which originally meant the number of deaths in battle, is now used to reduce a woman's body to a number, according to Bertini.

Although the phenomenon is more pronounced among young people aged 15-24, it also affects older ages, where men consider many relationships an 'achievement,' while women are stigmatized.

Influencers like Andrew Tate and Thaïs d’Escufon reproduce misogynistic stereotypes, finding great resonance on social media.

Bertini recalls that even the history of Facebook began with a similar logic. She suggests education and actions against stereotypes as resistance to the obsession with controlling women's bodies.
