Regulations have been approved in Cyprus for the creation of breastfeeding rooms in public and private spaces. The legislation aims to protect women's rights and support breastfeeding mothers.

The president of the National Breastfeeding Committee, Chryso Grigoriadou, stated that stakeholders have 12 months to prepare. The new law makes it mandatory to have a breastfeeding room in workplaces.

According to Ms. Grigoriadou, there is a specific list of public spaces where breastfeeding rooms should be created by the end of June 2026. The Ministry of Health has already started an information campaign.

The National Strategy for Supporting, Protecting and Promoting Breastfeeding includes actions to enhance information and support for mothers. The goal is to create a breastfeeding-friendly society.

According to data, 90% of newborns were breastfed during their stay in the maternity unit. The exclusive breastfeeding rate was 27.1% for 2023.
