Why We Shouldn't Suppress a Dog's Natural Instincts

A dog is happiest when it can express its natural instincts and needs. Professional dog trainer, Sotiris Kontakos, emphasizes that while rules are necessary for harmonious cohabitation, we should not deprive the dog of things that are important for its happiness and balance.

Mr. Kontakos explains that dogs know the world mainly through their sense of smell. Allowing them to sniff and explore during walks is important for their mental stimulation. Also, physical activity, such as running and playing, is a basic need. Rolling in the dirt or chasing a ball are normal behaviors.

Socialization is also important. Dogs are social animals and need contact with people and other dogs. Through socialization, they learn to communicate and develop balanced behavior. Training is necessary, but it must be done with respect for the animal's nature. The goal is to guide their instincts without suppressing them.

A dog that can run, sniff, play, and explore is a happy and balanced dog. When its basic needs are met, its relationship with humans becomes even stronger. Mr. Kontakos emphasizes that a dog is not an object, but a living organism with personality and needs.
