Establishment of the "Athina Ioanni Martinou" Endowed Chair at the University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) has established the first Endowed Chair in its history, dedicated to "Athina Ioanni Martinou." The decision was unanimously approved by the Senate, honoring the contribution of the Martinou family.
The establishment of the Chair was made accepting a proposal from the Grand Benefactor and Honorary Doctor, Mr. Athanasios Martinos. Athina Ioanni Martinou was born in 1927 in Glyfada and distinguished herself in the shipping industry. In 2021, her granddaughter, Ioanna Konstantinou Martinou, founded the Athina I. Martinou Foundation, with philanthropic activities.
Mr. Athanasios Martinos has significantly contributed to the upgrading of health services and university infrastructure of the University of Athens through donations. The new Chair will be located at the Medical School, in the 3rd University Cardiology Clinic, GNNTHA “Η SOTIRIA”.
The Rector of the University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siassos, expressed his gratitude to Mr. Martinos for his support.
The establishment of the Endowed Chair was implemented in accordance with Law 4957/2022, which allows Higher Education Institutions to establish chairs funded by donations, in order to strengthen teaching and research. The Chair is expected to contribute to the training of new scientists and the promotion of cardiovascular research.
