Pets and Heatwave: When is it Safe to Walk Your Dog?

Heatstroke is a serious threat to dogs, especially during the summer. Exercise is the most common cause, and it can happen within minutes. It is important to know how to protect your pet.
When to walk your dog: Ideally, avoid walks between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Prefer early morning or evening hours.
Precautions during the walk:
- Always carry water with you.
- Use a harness instead of a collar.
- Avoid hot pavements.
What temperature is dangerous? Most dogs are comfortable between 15-25°C, but this depends on the breed and condition of the dog.
Signs of heatstroke:
- Excessive panting
- Difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Confusion
- Vomiting or diarrhea (may contain blood)
- Instability
- Collapse
If you suspect heatstroke: Contact your veterinarian immediately and try to cool down your dog.
Tips to help a dog with heatstroke:
- Stop the walk and move it to a shady place.
- Call the vet.
- Give him small amounts of water.
- Pour cool water on his body.
