Heatwave and Gastroenteritis: Caution Advised on Food Storage
Share on:

The high temperatures and heatwave affecting Cyprus in recent days, combined with improper food storage, have led to an increase in cases of gastroenteritis. The Ministry of Health urges caution in the safe handling of food.

According to the Department of Meteorology, the heatwave will last until Sunday, with temperatures ranging between 42 and 44 degrees Celsius. The Ministry of Health warns that high temperatures favor food spoilage and the growth of pathogenic microorganisms.

The president of personal doctors, Mairy Avraamidou, stated that in recent weeks there has been an increase in patients with digestive system disorders and called on citizens to pay particular attention to the way they store and prepare their food.

The press representative of the State Health Services Organisation, Charalambos Charilaou, noted that patients with symptoms indicative of consuming spoiled food are arriving at the A&E departments.

The Ministry of Health and the Cyprus Red Cross have issued guidelines and announcements for protection from the heatwave, including the operation of air-conditioned spaces for the public in Nicosia and Limassol.

Recommendations:

  • Avoid exposure to the sun, especially during midday hours.
  • Stay in cool places.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks.
  • Light meals, rich in fruits and vegetables.
