Cyprus: Surge in Domestic Violence Reports in 2024

Domestic violence cases, mainly affecting women and children, are on the rise in Cyprus. The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr. Marios Hartsiotis, acknowledged this increase in a letter to the Parliament.

According to data presented to the Parliament following a question by AKEL MP, Marina Nikolaou, in 2024, there were 3,322 reports of family violence, resulting in the formation of 1,300 criminal files and the registration of 703 criminal cases in the courts. 711 arrest warrants and 672 Exclusion Orders or victim removal orders were issued.

For the first four months of 2025 (1/1/2025-30/4/2025), the reports amounted to 1,135, with estimates for further increase. 386 criminal files were formed, 283 cases were registered, and 260 arrest warrants and 279 exclusion orders were issued.

The Minister of Justice pointed out that the increase in domestic violence cases is creating additional pressure on the Police.
