Cyprus: Call for Blood Donations and Improved Blood Management
Share on:

Cyprus is facing blood shortages, especially during the summer months, affecting patients with thalassemia and other chronic conditions. Dr. Androulla Eleftheriou emphasizes the need to improve blood management, not just increase supply.

The country has a high ratio of volunteer blood donors, but demand is increasing due to an aging population and new medical treatments. The National Blood Strategy aims to reform the blood donation system, aligning with the European SoHO Regulation by 2027.

The strategy includes rational stock management, avoidance of unnecessary transfusions through Patient Blood Management (PBM), training of healthcare personnel, and the use of technology. Compliance with the SoHO Regulation is considered an investment in safety and efficiency.

Dr. Eleftheriou stresses that blood donation is an act of solidarity, but the responsibility for adequate reserves lies with the state and health agencies. No one should face uncertainty about their next transfusion.
