According to Eurostat data for 2022, Cyprus ranks among the lowest in the European Union in terms of family and child support. Despite its strong economic performance, the country significantly lags behind in spending on family benefits.

Specifically, expenditure per person on family and child benefits in Cyprus amounts to €277, while the EU average is €830. The percentage of the social budget allocated to family benefits is 4.6% in Cyprus, compared to 8.6% in the EU.

In comparison, Luxembourg spends €3,789 per person, Denmark €1,878, and Germany €1,616. Even Greece, at €264, is close to Cyprus' levels, with only Bulgaria having lower spending (€211).

The article highlights the lack of adequate structures and support for children and families in Cyprus, citing examples such as insufficient care for unaccompanied children and the absence of state aid for single-parent and large families.

It concludes that this situation constitutes a long-standing national failure, with successive governments failing to address the problem of inadequate support for children and families.
