Study: Online Hate Speech and Students in Cyprus

According to a study by the Research Center of Alexander College, 38% of students in Cyprus have been exposed to online hate speech in the past year. The study, presented on February 5th, examined the extent and patterns of student exposure to online hate speech, focusing on social media and gaming platforms.
The research, conducted in March-April 2025 on a sample of 178 students, revealed that 12% of participants admitted to producing or sharing online hate content. Social media emerged as the most frequent platform for exposure.
Dr. Kostas Christodoulides, Director of the Alexander Research Center, emphasized the need for comprehensive policy reforms and targeted educational interventions. He also pointed out gaps in the protection of vulnerable groups, such as LGBTQI+ individuals, the elderly, and those targeted due to gender or disability.
Professor Justyna Żylińska, from Helena Chodkowska University of Technology and Economics in Poland, presented the issue of hate crimes and the criminal protection system for victims, emphasizing their impact on society and human rights.
Professor Metanios Halabi, President of Alexander College, referred to the importance of quality education and the contribution of graduates to society.
