Cyprus: Changes to Gynecologists' Fees for Cesarean Sections
Share on:

The Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) plans to differentiate the annual fees of gynecologists from 2026, based on the percentage of cesarean sections they perform, especially those that are not emergencies. This has caused reactions from the medical community.

Dr. Afroditi Elissaiou, President of the Pancyprian Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, expressed her opposition to the measure, stressing that the increase in cesarean sections is a multifactorial issue. She pointed out that to achieve a reduction, public awareness and education of health professionals are needed, rather than targeting gynecologists.

The HIO also provides for financial rewards for gynecologists who achieve specific rates of natural births.
