PASYNO Requests Retirement at 60 for Nurses Due to Shift Work

The Pancyprian Nurses Union (PASYNO) has submitted a request to set the retirement age at 60 for nurses working rotating and night shifts. PASYNO's General Secretary, Mr. Savvas Iakovou, emphasized that the request is not about privileges but about the survival and dignity of nurses.
PASYNO is asking for institutional recognition of the nursing profession as "arduous and unhealthy," with corresponding benefits, and harmonization with European standards. Mr. Iakovou stressed the need to invest in young nurses and address staff shortages.
The proposal includes the possibility of gradual retirement from the age of 58 and a reduction of night shifts for people over 55. Mr. Iakovou warned that failure to respond to the request will lead to resignations, illnesses, and nurses fleeing abroad.
Examples were mentioned from EU countries such as Italy, France, Spain and Germany, where there are provisions for early retirement or allowances for nurses.
