New Disability Legislation Passed in Cyprus: Reactions and Concerns

The plenary session of the Parliament passed the new disability legislation, an event that caused both emotion and concerns. The legislation aims to substantially change the framework for supporting and protecting people with disabilities, with benefits reaching €106 million for the period 2026-2028.
The President of KYSOA, Themida Anthopoulou, hailed the legislation as a "brave and responsible moment," emphasizing that no one loses their acquired rights. She also mentioned that the legislation removes the age limit for severe motor disability.
However, the president of the Cyprus Paraplegic Organization, Dimitris Lambrianidis, expressed concerns, calling the legislation "poor." He also stated that there should be increases in existing benefits and new benefits for people with severe disabilities.
Despite the different views, the passage of the legislation is an important step towards strengthening the rights of people with disabilities in Cyprus.
