Public discussion in Cyprus is rapidly shifting to social media platforms, where images and short videos are taking center stage. A video or post can define the daily agenda and trigger political reactions.

Public trust is being reshaped, with citizens turning to accounts they deem "authentic." Social media functions as a space for informal discussion, while the influence of traditional media is waning.

Assistant Professor Dr. Ivi Lambrou, speaking to REPORTER, stated that the lack of trust in traditional media and skepticism towards official sources are strengthening the dynamics of social media.

Dr. Lambrou emphasized that traditional media has fallen behind, with reduced viewership and shrinking print media. She also noted that trust in social media is linked to the echo chamber and the confirmation of pre-existing beliefs.

Regarding anonymous profiles, Dr. Lambrou mentioned that we are ready to believe anything negative directed at those in power. She also commented that we are in the omnipotence of the image, which provides the feeling of "I know, because I saw it with my own eyes."

In conclusion, she noted that journalists should be allowed to be journalists and be able to use social media as tools.
