Positive Results from Mobile Phone Ban in Schools

The Ministry of Education reports positive results from the implementation of legislation banning mobile phone use in schools. The law, passed in October 2024, prohibits mobile phone use in secondary education schools during the school day.
Minister of Education, Athena Michaelidou, stated that the measure has had positive effects, improving the educational environment and reducing distractions during teaching. The evaluation of the measure is expected in the 2026-2027 school year.
However, there are practical difficulties in implementing the legislation, such as supervising students during breaks and addressing youth addiction to mobile phones. In severe cases of addiction, students are referred to the Educational Psychology Service.
In the last 2.5 years, the Ministry of Education has promoted significant changes in the education system, such as the abolition of the four-month exams and the expansion of pre-primary education. The readjustment of curricula and the installation of air conditioners in schools are also underway.
