Tzaneio Hospital: Erroneous Transfusion Sends 62-Year-Old to ICU

The health condition of a 62-year-old woman at Tzaneio Hospital remains critical after she received an incorrect blood transfusion, leading to her admission to the ICU. According to the report by the Health Quality Management Organization, a series of omissions and failures led to the patient's critical condition.
According to the report, the 62-year-old, who was being treated in the Neurology Clinic, suffered hemolysis after receiving a blood transfusion of a different blood type. The hematoma in her brain has expanded, worsening her condition.
The report highlights eight points where the transfusion protocol was violated, and notes damage to medical equipment. Specifically, the printer for patient bracelets was broken, resulting in incorrect identification. In addition, there was no specialized staff present during the transfusion, as required.
According to reports, the first transfusion was correctly administered to another patient at 18:15. However, shortly after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, the 30-year-old nursing assistant allegedly made the incorrect transfusion to the 62-year-old. The report also states that the patient was left unattended for 45 minutes after the transfusion until an attendant noticed the problem.
The family's lawyer, Athanasios Alexopoulos, stated that the protocols were not followed and the transfusion should have been performed in the presence of a doctor or nurse.
The 62-year-old remains in the ICU for the 20th day, fighting for her life.
