Maradona Death Trial: Request to Recuse Judges Rejected

The new Argentine court conducting the trial for the 2020 death of Diego Maradona has rejected a request from the defense team to recuse two judges.

Lawyers for Leopoldo Luque, Maradona's personal physician, who is under investigation for his death, had requested that two of the three judges of the new court, formed in July after the nullity of the first trial, be recused.

The lawyers cited "some fear that they may not be impartial." The judges rejected the request, saying that the motion "shows a purely delaying purpose based on personal assessments and speculations that lack any legal basis."

Mr. Luque's lawyers announced they would appeal. The first trial was declared void in late May.

Seven health professionals face charges of "intentional homicide", with potential prison sentences ranging from 8 to 25 years.

Maradona died at the age of 60 on November 25, 2020, from cardiorespiratory arrest.
