Cyprus Sports Deemed 'Augean Stable' by Parliamentary Committee

The Parliamentary Committee on Institutions has described Cypriot sports as an 'Augean stable,' emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability. During a discussion on the management of leases of assets belonging to the Cyprus Sports Organisation (KOA), Members of Parliament stressed that the autonomy of sports federations does not imply a lack of oversight.

Independent MP Alexandra Attalidou referred to 'prolonged dysfunction' and practices that raise issues of legality within the KOA. Committee Chairman Dimitris Dimitriou questioned the Cyprus Football Association's (KOΠ) perception of autonomy, given state funding for stadiums and policing.

Giorgos Loukaidis of AKEL spoke of nepotism and a lack of accountability, while Andreas Pasiourtidis, also from AKEL, stressed that autonomy does not mean a lack of oversight. Irene Charalambidou referred to reports by the Auditor General showing mismanagement.

KOA President Yannis Ioannou stated that an investigation into the leases has begun and that there are payment delays. State Aid Control Commissioner Stella Michaelidou stressed the importance of adhering to the European Commission's terms for state aid to the Alphamega stadium in Limassol.

Representatives from the Police and the Legal Service stated that the case is under investigation.
