Historic Challenge for FIFA: Mass Lawsuit from 100,000 Footballers

FIFA is facing a major challenge as the Dutch organization Justice for Players (JfP) has filed a mass lawsuit on behalf of approximately 100,000 footballers from the European Union and the United Kingdom. This lawsuit stems from the case of French midfielder Lassana Diarra, which was decided in his favor by the Court of Justice of the European Union.
The CJEU's decision stated that FIFA's transfer system violates the freedom of movement for workers and free competition. Diarra had been prevented from unilaterally terminating his contract with Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow to sign with Charleroi in Belgium.
JfP seeks to represent footballers who have played for European teams since 2002, seeking compensation for lost income and restrictions on freedom of negotiation. FIFPRO, the largest European players' union, has supported the lawsuit.
FIFA has not made an official statement. This case brings to the forefront the issue of FIFA's monopoly on labor relations in football.
