Maria Aristotelous had been diagnosed with cancer in 2023, as she herself had announced. She had described her experience as an "unprecedented experience" that began with the discovery of a small lump in her neck.

Maria had spoken openly about her battle with cancer, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and a positive attitude. She had characteristically stated: "In life, it doesn't matter what comes our way - everyone carries their cross - what matters is that we smile in difficult times."
