A new species of bee has been discovered in Western Australia and named 'Lucifer' due to its unique appearance. The discovery was made by Kit Prendergast of Curtin University while studying a rare wildflower.

The bee, scientifically named Megachile (Hackeriapis) Lucifer, stood out because of the small horns on its head. Prendergast, a fan of the Netflix series 'Lucifer', felt the name suited its appearance.

This is the first discovery of a new bee species in the area in 20 years. Prendergast expressed concern about the potential threat to the species from metal mining and climate change.

The discovery highlights the need to record native bees and protect their ecosystems, as they play a crucial role in plant pollination.
