Camel Protest in Budapest over Climate Crisis

Hungarians organized a camel caravan in Budapest to warn about desertification and demand action on global warming from Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Around 100 protesters marched to the Ministry of Agriculture, demanding water retention zones and sustainable land use. Environmental historian Lázos Ras reminded of the need for water management adapted to excessive rainfall.

Protesters argue that Hungary focuses on drainage and irrigation instead of sustainable policies. Musicians and jugglers participated in the protest, with references to the movie Mad Max.

Hungary is vulnerable to drought, with 63% of its land in a state of alert, according to the European Drought Observatory. The south of the country faces heatwaves and uneven rainfall distribution. This is the second year the camel protest has taken place.

The government states it is working on sustainable resource use in agriculture, having allocated 422 million euros to optimize consumption.
