The president of OASP, Efthymios Lekkas, spoke to in.gr about the strong 8.8 Richter earthquake in Russia, noting that "we are not yet sure if it is the main earthquake."

Mr. Lekkas mentioned that the earthquake is the 6th largest since 1900 and is "homologous to the 2011 earthquake in Japan." He also emphasized that large tsunami waves are not expected.

Approximately 2,700 residents were evacuated from their homes in the Kuril Islands, where a state of emergency has been declared. According to the mayor of Severo-Kurilsk, Alexander Ovsannikov, the third tsunami wave caused damage to the port infrastructure.

A tsunami of over one meter high was recorded in Japan, while warnings were issued for the USA and other countries bordering the Pacific. The President of the USA, Donald Trump, announced that a tsunami warning has been issued for Alaska and the Pacific coast of the United States.
