Controlled Burn in Machairas Forest to Prevent Wildfires

The Department of Forests announced the successful implementation of a controlled burn on the outskirts of Machairas Forest, in the «Maratheftis» area. The operation took place for the second consecutive year.
The application was carried out within the framework of the SEMEDFIRE project, co-funded by the «Horizon Europe» program, and concerned a selected zone on the outskirts of the forest, based on strict protocols and appropriate meteorological conditions.
The aim is to prevent and reduce the risk of a major fire, as these areas are at increased risk of rapid fire spread. The Department of Forests assures that controlled burns are planned and fully controlled, with strict safety measures.
This practice contributes to reducing combustible material, protecting lives and property, and enhancing biodiversity.
The Department of Forests will continue to implement the method in all forest regions until the end of April.
