Deadly Limassol Fire: Chain Reactions on Health, Environment, Food

The massive fire in mountainous and semi-mountainous Limassol is causing serious impacts on air and soil quality, with chain consequences on the food chain, according to TEPAK Professor Dimitris Tsaltas.
Speaking to CNA, Mr. Tsaltas emphasized the immediate, medium-term, and long-term effects on health, food quality, and the agricultural economy.
He referred to the destruction of forest areas and crops, as well as the pollution of the atmosphere by smoke and soot, exacerbated by winds and high temperatures. The small particles can remain in the atmosphere for a long time, creating chemical substances that are hazardous to health.
Mr. Tsaltas noted that the restoration of vegetation takes time, especially due to drought. He also stressed the importance of managing burned areas and the opportunity to intervene in nature, mentioning that the abandonment of vineyards contributed to the spread of the fire.
Damage to agricultural production, especially viticulture, will affect wine production. In addition, the salvaged products carry the aggravating elements of ash, polluting the soil. The effects on the health of the soil and consumers are long-term, also affecting livestock units.
Mr. Tsaltas concluded that the damage to the agricultural economy is significant and stressed the need for the collection of scientific data and strengthening of the agricultural sector.
