The cooling towers of a former nuclear power plant in Gundremmingen, Bavaria, Germany, were demolished in a controlled explosion on Saturday. The demolition marks a step towards phasing out nuclear energy in Germany and transitioning to renewable sources.

The plant, which provided jobs and boosted the local economy for nearly six decades, had been decommissioned since December 2021. Gundremmingen, Brokdorf and Grohnde are the nuclear power plants that have been decommissioned since December 2021.

Thousands of people watched the demolition from a safe distance. Three explosions preceded the demolition, the first to drive away animals and the other two to level the towers. The complete dismantling of the plant is expected to be completed by 2040.
