EU Considers Revising Emissions Targets by 2035

The European Commission will review its carbon dioxide emissions targets for 2035 by the end of the year, instead of 2026, according to EU sources.

The review comes after a meeting between the EU and automotive industry executives regarding their future, as the target of a 100% reduction in emissions from new cars and vans is considered unachievable by automotive industry groups. This target is equivalent to the end of internal combustion engines in new vehicles.

The review will focus on vans, as electric vans only account for 8.5% of new vans in the EU. The possibility of using biofuels, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and range extender systems is being considered.

Additionally, the Commission will present a proposal for a new category of small electric vehicles with lower tax treatment.

Meanwhile, VW is delaying the electric Golf due to cost cuts and delays in the renovation of the Wolfsburg plant. Plans to transfer production of the existing combustion engine Golf to Mexico have also been postponed.

The delay of the electric Golf gives Chinese competitors more time to expand in Europe. VW plans to launch four entry-level electric cars from 2026, with starting prices of around 25,000 euros.
