Clean Monday: Guidelines for Forest and Countryside Protection

The Department of Forests has issued recommendations for the protection of forests and the countryside ahead of the February 21-23 long weekend and Clean Monday. It is emphasized that lighting fires is prohibited anywhere in the countryside, except in specially designated areas in organized picnic sites.
Lighting fires within state forests or within 2 km of their edges is punishable by imprisonment of up to 5 years or a fine of up to €25,000. Causing a fire carries a penalty of imprisonment of up to 12 years or a fine of €100,000.
Additionally, it is recommended to avoid cutting wildflowers and shrubs. The public is urged to keep the areas clean by placing waste in bins or taking it with them.
Finally, due to pine tree infestation by pine processionary caterpillars, it is recommended to avoid staying near infested pine trees and contact with the caterpillars. In case of a skin problem, seek medical advice.
