Heatwaves in cities have become more frequent and intense, making it necessary to find ways to cool down. "Climate shelters" are a solution to cope with extreme temperatures, especially for vulnerable populations.

During a heatwave, spaces such as public parks, libraries, community centers, museums, and schools can offer relief.

Data scientist Manuel Banza points out that the urban heat island effect intensifies in cities due to high population density and heat-absorbing surfaces.

Banza published a study on potential climate shelter locations in Lisbon, combining the mapping of the heat island effect with the presence of gardens, fountains, pools, and libraries.

In Lisbon, over half of the residents feel thermal discomfort in their homes, both in summer (56.5%) and winter (63.2%). Heat is also associated with increased mortality.

Barcelona has created a network of over 400 climate shelters, offering a model for other cities. The criteria include covered space, access to water, and toilets.
