Red Spots in Sea of Galilee: Natural Phenomenon

Bright red spots have appeared on the surface of the Sea of Galilee in Israel, causing concern.

Experts attribute the phenomenon to green algae of the species Botryococcus braunii, which has multiplied in recent years. The red color is due to the accumulation of a natural pigment from the algae in combination with exposure to sunlight.

The ministry assured that the pigment is non-toxic and the waters are safe for swimming, with no allergic reactions reported.

The Jerusalem Post recalls that the phenomenon brings to mind the first of the ten plagues of Pharaoh, when the waters of the Nile turned red.
