At least 32 miners have died in a cobalt mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo after a bridge collapsed. The accident occurred at the Kalanto mine, in the province of Loualaba, approximately 42 kilometers southeast of Kolwezi.

Local authorities reported that the collapse was caused by the entry of illegal miners, despite a ban on access due to heavy rainfall. According to an official from the mining service, the death toll is as high as 49.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
