The death toll from Cyclone Gamane in Madagascar has risen to at least 40. The cyclone struck Toamasina, the island's second-largest city, with wind gusts reaching 250 km/h.

The water supply in Toamasina has been cut off, and much of the city is plunged into darkness. According to the disaster management office, 12 people drowned inside a container.

The World Food Programme's director for Madagascar, Tanya Goossens, said the city is operating with 5% of its electricity supply and has no water. A WFP warehouse was also completely destroyed.

Damage to infrastructure, such as uprooted trees and metal roofs scattered on the streets, is hindering the delivery of aid. Rescue teams cannot reach many areas due to damaged bridges and roads.

China has offered Madagascar 100 million yuan (€12 million) in aid, while France has announced the dispatch of essential supplies and rescuers from La Réunion.
