Morocco: Deadly Floods in Safi – At Least 21 Dead

At least 21 people have died in Safi, Morocco, on Sunday following sudden and severe floods. The floods were triggered by torrential rains that hit the area, leading to an 'exceptional' flood, according to authorities.
More than 70 houses and shops in the old city were flooded, and parts of the road network were damaged. Emergency services and civil protection forces continue efforts to locate victims and provide support to those affected.
The Moroccan meteorological service had warned of heavy rains and snowfall. Heavy rainfall and floods are not uncommon in Morocco, despite the severe drought the country is facing.
In September 2024, heavy rains caused floods in southern and southeastern Morocco, resulting in the deaths of 18 people.
