More than 600 children in northern Nigeria have died from malnutrition in the last six months, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The organization warns of an "alarming malnutrition crisis."

Cases of child malnutrition increased by 208% between January and June compared to last year. MSF reports that 652 children have died in their facilities since the beginning of 2025 due to a lack of rapid access to care.

Cuts in foreign aid, rising living costs, and jihadist attacks have worsened the food situation. Ahmed Aldikari, an MSF representative in Nigeria, said that last year was a turning point, but the crisis has exceeded all expectations due to massive budget cuts from the US, Britain, and the EU.

An MSF survey of 750 mothers showed that over 50% suffer from acute malnutrition and 13% from severe acute malnutrition. Nearly 31 million people in Nigeria face acute hunger, according to David Stevenson of the World Food Programme.
