Nigeria: At Least 23 Dead Due to Floods

At least 23 people have died and thousands have been made homeless in Nigeria due to severe flooding that has hit the country. The floods were caused by heavy rainfall in recent days in northeastern Nigeria.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that authorities are conducting search and rescue operations and have set up temporary shelters for flood victims. Dozens of people were injured in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State.

Authorities have warned of further rainfall and urged residents to move to safer locations. More than 200 people have died since the start of this year's rainy season in Nigeria.

In 2024, over 300 people died and over one million were displaced due to floods in 34 of Nigeria's 36 states.

Heavy rainfall typically hits Nigeria between June and November, often causing deadly floods due to inadequate infrastructure.
