Nigeria: At Least 23 Dead in Flood Disaster
At least 23 people have died and thousands are homeless in northeastern Nigeria due to recent flooding. The floods were caused by heavy rainfall, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Dozens were injured in the city of Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, where many neighborhoods flooded on Sunday. Authorities and humanitarian organizations are providing assistance and trying to prevent the spread of disease.
Nigerian authorities are conducting search and rescue operations and have set up temporary shelters. They have also warned of further rainfall.
Typically, Nigeria experiences heavy rainfall between June and November, often leading to deadly floods due to inadequate infrastructure.
More than 200 people have died from floods in Nigeria since the start of this year's rainy season, with most deaths reported in Niger State.
In 2024, over 300 people died and over one million were displaced in at least 34 of Nigeria's 36 states.
