Illegal Landfills: A Major Problem in Cyprus

The Environment Commissioner, Antonia Theodosiou, highlighted the significant problem of illegal landfills in Cyprus. Despite efforts, the situation remains difficult to resolve, requiring contribution from citizens, local authorities, and the state.
Ms. Theodosiou mentioned numerous complaints about aesthetic pollution, odors, and health hazards. The Department of Environment has launched a campaign to remove materials, but the situation remains critical.
Regarding complaints about the Municipality of Kourion, Ms. Theodosiou visited the area and identified a huge illegal disposal site for inert materials and waste. The Mayor of Kourion has requested funds to manage the site.
The Commissioner's Office organized the first Sustainability Festival of the Pedieos River, highlighting the problem of waste disposal. Despite cleaning efforts, the problem remains enormous.
Ms. Theodosiou emphasized the importance of cooperation with the Department of Environment and the need for awareness and mobilization of citizens.
