Environmental Groups Criticize Forestry Department over Akamas
Share on:

Four environmental organizations have strongly criticized the Forestry Department for violations found in the Akamas National Forest Park projects. The organizations, Terra Cypria, BirdLife Cyprus, Cyprus Wildlife Society, and the Initiative for the Protection of Natural Coasts, accuse the Forestry Department of "arrogance" and "denial of reality."

In their joint statement, the organizations challenge the Forestry Department's claim of being "vindicated" by the project re-evaluations, arguing that serious violations of legally binding environmental terms have been documented.

They point out that since October 2023, the Forestry Department has refused to acknowledge its mistakes and responsibilities, resulting in the construction site remaining open in the heart of the Akamas Peninsula. They emphasize that all other members of the Ad-hoc Committee, including state services, have acknowledged the violations.

The organizations raise specific questions about the actions that need to be taken, such as the demolition of retaining walls and the removal of the water supply pipeline. They also mention the Audit Office's report, which characterizes the situation as a "bombshell" for the Forestry Department.

The environmental organizations call on the Minister of Agriculture to take a stand and end the tolerance towards the Forestry Department's practices, while also requesting the publication of the investigation findings.
