A research team at the University of Ioannina is developing an innovative method to combat plane tree wilt, a disease threatening plane trees. The iGEM IOANNINA team, awarded for its work in synthetic biology, is using techniques such as CRISPR-Cas to create an environmentally friendly treatment that targets the fungus Ceratocystis platani.

The treatment aims to protect plane trees, especially those with historical and cultural value. The Region of Epirus supports the effort with funding for the pilot application of the treatment. Scientists estimate that over 52,000 trees have been lost in Greece due to the fungus.

Plane tree wilt first appeared in Greece in 2003 and has spread to various regions. The spread is also due to human activity, while climate change exacerbates the problem. At the same time, significant damage is also recorded in fir forests from xylophagous insects.
