Nuclear Winter: Simulation of a Nightmare Scenario

A new study simulates the impact of a nuclear winter on global corn production. According to the study, smoke and soot from fires caused by a large-scale nuclear war would block sunlight, leading to a sharp drop in global temperatures and the destruction of agriculture.
A regional nuclear war, emitting 5.5 tons of soot, could reduce corn production by 7%, while a global war with 165 tons of soot would cause an 80% drop. The simulations were performed using the Cycles agro-ecosystem model.
Researchers suggest creating 'agricultural resilience kits' with cold-resistant seeds to address the effects. They also point out that similar disasters can be caused by powerful volcanic eruptions.
