Fir Forest in Erymanthos at Risk: Appeal from the Municipality of Ancient Olympia
Share on:

The Municipality of Ancient Olympia expresses strong concern about the state of the Erymanthos fir forest, warning of potential total destruction due to extensive desiccation.

In a statement, the Municipal Council emphasizes the need to address the problem immediately, highlighting the impact on biodiversity, soil erosion, increased fire risk, and the economic decline of the area.

The Municipality proposes that the Ministry of Environment and Energy provide guidelines to the Forest Directorates, strengthen the involved Forest Directorates with personnel, and secure the necessary funding. Specifically, it proposes the expansion of the “Antinero” program, the development of the forest road network, the development of nurseries and transplantation of fir seedlings, the prohibition of logging healthy fir trees, the protection of water resources, and the holding of information days.

In addition, it calls for the declaration of the affected areas in a state of emergency and the taking of emergency fire protection measures.
