6.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Taiwan – No Tsunami Warning Issued

A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck northeast of Taiwan on December 27, 2025. The epicenter was located approximately 30 kilometers off the coast, with a focal depth of 67.5 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake occurred at 23:05 local time (17:05 Greek time). There are no reports of injuries or major damage. No tsunami warning was issued.
Buildings in the capital, Taipei, shook from the tremor. The Fire Department is conducting a damage assessment.
Taiwan is located near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. In 2016, more than 100 people were killed by an earthquake in southern Taiwan, while in 1999, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake killed more than 2,000 people.
