A 33-year-old skier died on Saturday after being swept away by an avalanche in Servières, in the French Alps, according to the Gap prosecutor's office.

The man was skiing with another man, who was rescued after managing to hold onto a tree when the avalanche hit, explained a prosecutor.

The victim succumbed to his injuries in a hospital where he was transported.

On Friday, a 65-year-old woman was also killed by a snowslide in the same area. She was using special footwear for snow climbing.

Approximately 20 people have lost their lives in January due to avalanches in the Alps, in Austria, Switzerland and France.
