Trump Mandates Coal Power for U.S. Armed Forces

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the Department of Defense to procure electricity from coal-burning plants, as part of his effort to revitalize the coal industry.

Donald Trump signed a presidential executive order during a ceremony at the White House, surrounded by coal miners.

The order directs the Pentagon to enter into long-term contracts for the supply of electricity generated from coal, ensuring uninterrupted supply for military installations.

The Trump administration opposes energy production from renewable sources, considering wind power unreliable. Trump stated that coal is "absolutely essential for our national security."

Coal production in the U.S. has declined in recent years, as it is replaced by natural gas and renewable sources. In 2023, coal accounted for just over 16% of total energy production, down from 50% in 2000.
