Hurricane Melissa has struck southwestern Jamaica with winds reaching 300 km/h. This is the strongest hurricane in the country's recorded history.

According to the National Hurricane Center of the United States, Melissa will cross Jamaica vertically in the coming hours, causing destructive winds and torrential rains. It is then expected to move towards the eastern coast of Cuba, where it is expected to weaken.

The Red Cross has warned that up to 1.5 million people are expected to be directly affected by the hurricane.

The Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, stated that Hurricane Melissa will cause "catastrophic damage" and urged citizens to stay in their homes.
