Jakarta: Densely Populated City Faces Sinking Threat
Share on:

Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia with over 40 million residents, faces an increasing risk of sinking by 2050. Rising sea levels and excessive groundwater extraction are worsening the situation.

In areas of North Jakarta, the ground is sinking by 20-28 cm annually, with some areas already below sea level. Cracks in buildings and frequent floods are visible signs.

Authorities are planning the "Giant Sea Wall" and drainage improvements, while considering the partial relocation of government functions.
