Chile: One Miner Found Dead at El Teniente, Search Continues

One of the five miners trapped in the El Teniente mine in Chile, the world's largest underground copper mine, has been found dead. The collapse occurred at a depth of 1,200 meters following a 4.2 magnitude seismic tremor.
The state copper company CODELCO announced that rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate the remaining four miners. They are using heavy machinery, attempting to clear the blocked tunnels at a rate of 15-20 meters per 24 hours.
The mine's director, Andrés Music, stated that the discovery of the dead worker is sad but encouraging for the continuation of the operation. The workers were carrying out expansion projects at the mine, which produces 356,000 tons of copper annually. Chile is the largest copper producing country in the world, with 5.3 million tons in 2024.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric visited the families of the missing miners and promised the completion of the search and rescue operation.
