Hydropower: The Vast Untapped Potential

Hydropower remains the third-largest source of electricity worldwide, often overlooked despite its vast potential.

While many governments are turning to solar and wind power, hydropower plays a significant role in global energy production, providing clean energy.

With rising fossil fuel prices, governments are assessing their energy security and considering the development of various energy sources.

China holds 29% of the world's installed hydropower capacity, followed by Brazil, the United States, and Canada. Countries like Norway and Paraguay rely heavily on hydropower.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol argues that hydropower is being overlooked, despite its significant expansion potential.

Unlike solar and wind power, hydropower is flexible and can quickly adjust its production. Pumped-storage hydropower (PSH) plants can operate as giant batteries, storing energy.

In the United States, an underwater hydropower technology is being used in the Great Lakes. Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) announced a project on the St Lawrence River in Montreal.

Hydropower can offer a significant clean alternative energy source and provide improved stability.
