Algerian Woman Tried to Flee After Daughter's Death

In an attempt to flee Greece after the death of her 3-year-old daughter, the 32-year-old Algerian woman, Warda Atrouche, allegedly tried to return to her homeland.
According to reports, Atrouche contacted the Algerian embassy in Athens, stating that she had two children instead of three, and inquired about how she could return to Algeria.
The embassy informed her about the Voluntary Returns Program of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which, in cooperation with the Ministry of Migration and Asylum, offers coverage of airline tickets and 500 euros to those who wish to return to their country and do not have asylum in Greece.
Atrouche made an appointment with the IOM, but was arrested before she could attend. Her sister contacted the embassy requesting legal assistance.
Atrouche had applied for asylum in Greece in January 2020, which was rejected. Since then, she had been in asylum-seeking status without legal documents. According to her claims, this was the reason she threw her child on the beach of Palaio Faliro.
