Extradition Thriller with Moldovan Oligarch

A legal thriller is unfolding regarding the extradition case of Moldovan oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc, who was arrested at Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos". He is wanted by Moldova for embezzling 850 million euros.

The 59-year-old is accused of embezzling 1 billion dollars from three state-owned banks in Moldova between 2012 and 2014. Greek authorities have also received a second extradition request from Russia.

According to SKAI, Russia accuses Plahotniuc of plotting to assassinate a political opponent, as well as participating in a criminal organization that trafficked cannabis from Spain to Russia.

Within 40 days, both Moldova and Russia must send a complete file with the information supporting their requests. The final decision on the extradition will be made by the Greek Minister of Justice.
